Celebrating Black History Month Doris Brown - Retired AACPS Teacher #BlackHistoryMonth
3 months ago, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Doris Brown - Retired AACPS Teacher Mrs. Doris Brown's legacy is one of dedication, education, and community. Her AACPS journey began as a student attending the Shady Side Rosenwald School for elementary education. It continued through her graduation from Wiley H. Bates High School in 1951. She is a perfect example of homegrown talent. With a passion for teaching, Mrs. Brown pursued her studies at Maryland Teachers College at Bowie (currently Bowie State University), preparing for a lifelong career in education. After college, she returned to AACPS, taking an assignment to be a teacher at The Ralph J. Bunche School in Edgewater. She taught there for 5 years before returning home to teach at the Lula G. Scott School (previously known as Shady Side School). She had a brief tenure at Belvedere Elementary, ultimately returning to the Lula G. Scott School, where she taught until her well-earned retirement in 1986. Mrs. Brown is still a constant presence at what is now the Lula G. Scott Community Center. At age 92, Mrs. Brown has wise words to share with current AACPS students: "Stay in school. I wasn't too sure whether I really wanted to go to college. It wasn't easy for me. I went to college, and it wasn't easy, but I stayed there because I knew the benefit would be to get out here and be a teacher. Just continue to persevere; whatever you are doing, just keep going. Don't quit. Even if it is not easy, just don't quit."
No te rindas. Aunque no sea fácil, no te rindas.”
#TBT Spotlight on CTE Mr. Hayes was a student at South River High while attending the Vo-Tech Center (CAT-South) for the Automotive program. He is now the Automotive Instructor at CAT-South. "As a young man, my mother realized I had a passion for anything mechanical. She was an AACPS teacher and she was told that the new South River Vo-Tech Center was opening in the 77-78 school year. This was a perfect fit for me. Some of my best high school memories were formed in my AutoTech class. After completing the Automotive program, the work-study coordinator found me an apprenticeship position at the Annapolis Chrysler Plymouth dealer. I worked at that dealer for 27 years and became a very successful master automotive service technician. In 2007 the dealership was closing down. I had a former coworker who was teaching at what is now known as CAT-South. He thought I would be a good teacher because I was good at explaining what was wrong with people's cars. As a teacher, I began taking the necessary courses to get my APC and have been teaching at CAT-South ever since. I really enjoy teaching at the same school that I attended. I always tell my students that I once sat in the student seats and I understand their passion for mechanical knowledge. The CAT-South Automotive Service Technology program was good when I attended and I'm working every day with our administration to make it Great!"

Celebrating CTE Month with #CareerTechTuesday! Business Education at Arundel High School #BelongGrowSucceed

Business Education - I majored in Marketing and minored in Sports Commerce & Culture at UMD before spending 11 years in finance. Driven by my passion for teaching and mentoring, I made a career change into Business Education, the only subject I could ever see myself teaching. I love business—especially marketing and finance—and enjoy helping students learn real-world skills and knowledge that will impact their futures. Arundel HS offers both Honors Accounting and Honors Marketing 2—courses that provide incredible opportunities for students, such as collaborating with local businesses on social media advertising and organizing a TED Talk event for our school. Our National Business Honor Society is thriving, with 59 junior and senior members, and our personal finance club, the “Millionaire’s Club,” is highly successful, having won the state championship in the Stock Market Game three times. Business Education classes are essential for high school students because they teach critical life skills like financial literacy, communication, and problem-solving that prepare them for both college and careers. These courses provide hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, marketing, and management, helping students develop a strong foundation for success in any industry. By learning how businesses operate and managing money effectively, students gain practical knowledge that will benefit them for a lifetime.

#TBT Spotlight on CTE Ms. Wolf was a student at North County while attending CAT-North for Baking & Pastry Arts. She is now in her fourth year teaching Baking & Pastry Arts at CAT-North. "My student experience at CAT-North was truly life-shaping, and single-handedly the best decision I've ever made. I knew when it came to my career, it would be an honor and a privilege to come back to CAT North as an instructor myself. I consider myself lucky to get to show up and do the job I do every day with the staff and students I get to spend my time with. Baking is truly a work of art, a feat of science, and a job of love at the same time- an industry I love I get to share with my students daily." Bonus Image: My instructor giving me a hug when I was announced as the state gold medalist in Baking & Pastry my senior year of high school. A photo of one of my students giving me a hug. That same student also won the state gold medal in Baking & Pastry last year, in her senior year of high school. #fullcirclemoment Proud AACPS-CTE-Graduate-Turned-Teacher

Celebrating CTE Month with #CareerTechTuesday! Computer Science at Old Mill High School #BelongGrowSucceed
3 months ago, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Computer Science CS profoundly impacts our lives, the economy, and the environment. Computer scientists design, develop, and analyze software and hardware to solve problems in many fields. The most remarkable thing about the CS Program is that I have the autonomy to teach my content the way I feel comfortable while connecting careers to what I teach. We officially started the Old Mill Media Team, where students who are a part of the team will begin to support athletics, theater, and music. We had our first media day this year and focused on girls' basketball. We had a fantastic time and community support. We were able to create short videos, video announcements, and so much more. We are planning on piloting a podcast in the next few weeks. There are many opportunities for students to explore and create using different styles of media. As a CTE teacher, I know that I’m the introduction to many fun careers. The CTE program allows students to sample different fields while making real-world connections in the classroom. Old Mill High School received the 2024 College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. Liana Johnson-Suarez, Computer Science Teacher, Old Mill HS
The weather forecast is calling for potentially icy road conditions on Thursday morning (2/6). While we do not anticipate any changes in our operational schedule at this time, the possibility of a delay or a shift to virtual instruction does exist. All AACPS employees as well as students with AACPS-issued devices should be routinely taking devices home and charging them nightly. Given the forecast, we thought it prudent to provide this reminder. Any changes to operational schedules, should they occur, will be made through the normal channels. Thank you.
