GALA Hispanic Theatre - Washington DC The GALA (Grupo de Artistas Latino Americanos) Hispanic Theatre is a hallmark of Spanish and Latin American culture and performing arts. The Theatre was founded in 1976 by the Argentinian Hugo Medrano and his American-born wife, Rebecca Read Medrano. The creation of the GALA Theatre aimed to fill the cultural void of Spanish-speaking plays in the Washington area. Since its conception, GALA has played a vital role in showcasing the diversity of Latino artistry and culture. “GALA provides opportunities for the Latino artist, educates youth, and engages the entire community in an exchange of ideas and perspectives.” The Theatre moved through several areas before finding its home in 2005 at Tivoli Square in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC. All 11th grade students will be given the PSAT and all 9th grade students will be given the PSAT 8/9 college assessment on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. High school students NOT taking the PSAT or PSAT 8/9 on October 9 will report to school 3 hours and 30 minutes later than normal. Double bus runs will be in place. Bud Zapata - Fire Marshal and Public Information Officer My family is from El Salvador and I’ve always taken pride in who I am as a Latino. I’m an alumn of AACPS, a graduate of Annapolis HS, and when I started school I was an ESOL student who didn’t know much English. I remember all of my teachers, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am today. As the first Hispanic captain in the Annapolis Fire Department, I had to overcome many barriers in my line of work. My strong work ethic and positive attitude come from my family - they've shown me that regardless of the situation, you take each challenge and continue to look forward. I enjoy what I do because I get to visit schools and be in the community, and the students and families smile when I speak to them in Spanish. Kids tell me they want to be firefighters, and I tell them they can do it, that they’re our future. As a role model, I want to see them excel and go above and beyond what I have been able to accomplish. Students: continue to work hard in school. Don’t lose your Spanish language skills. Being bilingual is important because you can help so many people and make a difference in their lives. In my job, it’s a relief for many Hispanic families to know that there’s someone who speaks their language. Our Hispanic community has grown and we need to reflect our community. Take pride in who you are as a Latino - embrace your culture and your language.

Bud Zapata - Jefe de Bomberos y Oficial de Información Pública Mi familia es de El Salvador y siempre he tomado orgullo de lo que soy como latino. Soy un graduado de AACPS, de Annapolis HS, y cuando empecé la escuela era un estudiante de ESOL que no sabía mucho inglés. Recuerdo a todos mis maestros, y si no fuera por ellos no estaría donde estoy hoy. Como primer capitán hispano del Departamento de Bomberos de Annapolis, tuve que superar muchas barreras en mi trabajo. Mi gran ética de trabajo y mi actitud positiva se las debo a mi familia, que me ha enseñado que, sea cual sea la situación, hay que tomar cada obstáculo y seguir adelante. Me encanta lo que hago porque puedo visitar escuelas y estar en la comunidad, y los estudiantes y las familias sonríen cuando les hablo en español. os niños me dicen que quieren ser bomberos, y yo les digo que pueden hacerlo, que son nuestro futuro. Como buen modelo a seguir, quiero verles sobresalir e ir más allá de lo que yo he podido conseguir. Estudiantes: sigan esforzándose en la escuela. No pierdan su dominio del español. Ser bilingüe es importante porque puedes ayudar a mucha gente y hacer una diferencia en sus vidas. En mi trabajo, es un alivio para muchas familias hispanas saber que hay alguien que habla su idioma. Nuestra comunidad hispana ha crecido y tenemos que reflejarla. Toma orgullo de lo que eres como latino: abraza tu cultura y tu idioma.

The next meeting of the Innovative School Scheduling Workgroup established by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, in the Board Room of the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis. The workgroup has been created to engage stakeholders in a robust conversation regarding school scheduling in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) and to consider innovative school scheduling models for implementation in AACPS. It consists of AACPS staff, elected officials, and representatives from community organizations. Meetings are open to the public and public feedback on innovative school scheduling in AACPS and the work of the workgroup is encouraged. Individuals will be able to provide comment in person or virtually at the end of each workgroup meeting. A total of five speakers will be permitted to speak for three minutes each. Written comment may also be submitted to Grace Wilson, Senior Legislative and Policy Specialist, at gawilson1@aacps.org. As the group’s work progresses, more information will be posted at www.aacps.org/schedulingworkgroup. Those who cannot attend meetings in person can watch virtually through links found on that page.

AACPS: Brooklyn Park MS was on a “hold” status for about an hour as a precaution as police investigated an alleged threat made by a student after an altercation. Students and staff remained safe in the school. Fortunately, the threat was not deemed credible and police provided a presence as a precuation. The school will continue normal operations for the remainder of the day. Around the county, Police and schools are dealing with many perceived threats which require additional resources. As Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell mentioned in his letter last Friday and in yesterday’s Thursday Thoughts, we will continue to investigate every threat brought to our attention in partnership with Police.
