🎉 Celebrating #HispanicHeritageMonth! Bud Zapata - Fire Marshal and Public Information Officer, Annapolis Fire Department #AACPSFamily #CelebrateDiversity #AACPSCelebrates #MesDeLaHerenciaHispana

Bud Zapata - Fire Marshal and Public Information Officer My family is from El Salvador and I’ve always taken pride in who I am as a Latino. I’m an alumn of AACPS, a graduate of Annapolis HS, and when I started school I was an ESOL student who didn’t know much English. I remember all of my teachers, and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am today. As the first Hispanic captain in the Annapolis Fire Department, I had to overcome many barriers in my line of work. My strong work ethic and positive attitude come from my family - they've shown me that regardless of the situation, you take each challenge and continue to look forward. I enjoy what I do because I get to visit schools and be in the community, and the students and families smile when I speak to them in Spanish. Kids tell me they want to be firefighters, and I tell them they can do it, that they’re our future. As a role model, I want to see them excel and go above and beyond what I have been able to accomplish. Students: continue to work hard in school. Don’t lose your Spanish language skills. Being bilingual is important because you can help so many people and make a difference in their lives. In my job, it’s a relief for many Hispanic families to know that there’s someone who speaks their language. Our Hispanic community has grown and we need to reflect our community. Take pride in who you are as a Latino - embrace your culture and your language.

AACPS: Brooklyn Park MS was on a “hold” status for about an hour as a precaution as police investigated an alleged threat made by a student after an altercation. Students and staff remained safe in the school. Fortunately, the threat was not deemed credible and police provided a presence as a precuation. The school will continue normal operations for the remainder of the day. Around the county, Police and schools are dealing with many perceived threats which require additional resources. As Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell mentioned in his letter last Friday and in yesterday’s Thursday Thoughts, we will continue to investigate every threat brought to our attention in partnership with Police. Today, Police released additional information about this issue: https://x.com/AACOPD/status/1837195637479109068

🎉 Celebrating #HispanicHeritageMonth! Alison Flores - Director of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources in the Office of the Anne Arundel County Executive #AACPSFamily #CelebrateDiversity #AACPSCelebrates #MesDeLaHerenciaHispana

Alison Flores - Director of Hispanic/Latino and Multicultural Resources Though I was born in Maryland, my parents came from EL Salvador. They have worked really hard and have created a successful life from nothing. They always ensured their kids excelled in school and provided the support we needed at home. I was in English as a Second Language (ESOL) for a long time, and whenever I talk to people about learning English, I share with them that it is a journey. Many things make me proud of my Hispanic Heritage, including our people's tenacity, resiliency, and creativity. Another thing I love about being Hispanic is seeing the diversity of Latino cultures throughout Latin America. We capture the best parts of a lot of things!

Hispanic Heritage Month
🎉 Celebrating #HispanicHeritageMonth ! Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long observance in June 1968, introduced by Congressman George E. Brown and approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 17, 1968. In 1988, a bill championed by Senator Paul Simon and U.S. Representative Esteban E. Torres extended the celebration to a full 31 days. President Ronald Reagan signed this extension into law on August 17, 1988. On September 14, 1989, President George H.W. Bush officially declared the period from September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. This timeframe honors the independence days of several Latin American countries: Mexico (September 16, 1810), Chile (September 18, 1810), Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (September 15, 1821), and Belize (September 21, 1981). #CelebrateDiversity #AACPSCelebrates
