Glen Burnie High School biology teacher Noel Pauller has been selected as one of 10 educators to be recognized across the nation as part of the 2026 Claes Nobel Educator of the Year Awards, presented by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). The awards recognize exemplary educators who demonstrate leadership, excellence and a strong commitment to preparing students for success in college and life.

“I believe that biology truly comes to life when students can see how it connects to the real world,” Pauller said. “I am humbled to receive this honor from NSHSS, and I am grateful to share the recognition with all the curious, hard-working students I've taught over the years, as well as colleagues past and present who have helped me grow as an educator.”

Pauller, one of nine finalists for the award, is in his 28th year of teaching, and 10th in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. He taught at North County High School for eight years before moving to Arundel High School last year and Glen Burnie High School this year.

“Mr. Pauller is a very talented and dedicated Biology teacher,” Glen Burnie Principal Kevin Carr said. “We are thrilled to have him as a member of our science department and faculty. We look forward to seeing his continued innovation and pedagogical advancement benefit Glen Burnie students for years to come.” 

In honoring Pauller, NSHSS cited his organization of instruction around real-world observations and questions. The approach increases student engagement, curiosity and evidence-based inquiry. The organization said his approach helps students take greater ownership of their learning and develop critical-thinking skills.

“Throughout his career, he has focused on creating innovative learning experiences that bridge the gap between complex scientific theory and student discovery,” NSHSS wrote in announcing the recognition. “He is passionate about empowering his students to take ownership of their learning, helping them develop the critical thinking skills necessary for success both in and out of the classroom."
