The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will hold a special meeting to vote on a new contract for Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
The Board unanimously reappointed Dr. Bedell to a second four-year term as the leader of Maryland’s fourth largest school district on February 18, 2026. That appointment is effective July 1, 2026. Dr. Bedell’s current contract expires on June 30, 2026.
This school year marks Dr. Bedell’s 26th in education and 10th as a Superintendent. He was first appointed Superintendent for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) in June 2022 and began his duties two months later. Dr. Bedell served for six years as Superintendent in Kansas City Public Schools prior to coming to AACPS.
During his first four years in AACPS, Dr. Bedell has overseen the school system’s continued emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic, increases in test scores and access to advanced coursework by all students, and two phases of comprehensive redistricting. Also in that time, chronic absenteeism has declined, retention of both instructional and non-instructional employees has risen and 95 percent of AACPS schools have earned three-, four-, or five-star ratings on the Maryland Report Card in addition to AACPS achieving a record number of five-star schools.
The June 10 meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. It is open to the public and subject to normal space limitations in the Board Room.
The contract is the single action item on the June 10 meeting agenda. The Board will hear public comments from up to 10 total speakers (virtual and in-person combined) on that agenda item during a single public comment section in the early portion of the meeting.
Other procedures and protocols for public comment, including items for which the Board will not accept comment, can be found on the Board meeting page. Links to register for public comment or submit written comment on the agenda item will be live on the Board meeting page at 3 p.m. on the Friday before the Board meeting.
The meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV and on AACPS’ YouTube channel.
While in public session, the Board will vote to go into closed session 30 minutes following the meeting to discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public.
