Purple Star Schools 2026

When it comes to supporting and addressing the needs of students whose parents or guardians serve in the United States Armed Forces, Anne Arundel County Public Schools is once again at the forefront.

Over the last two years, five AACPS schools have been designated Purple Star Schools. This year, the school district is adding four more to the list. MacArthur Middle, Magothy River Middle School, Meade High School and the West Meade Early Education Center are among the 27 Purple Star Schools announced by the Maryland State Department of Education this week.

The Purple Star Schools Program was begun two years ago by MSDE to honor schools that recognize and support the unique needs of military dependents.

“Creating a district where every student can Belong, Grow, and Succeed means meeting each student where they are and helping them get to where they can go,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell said. “I am so proud that our work to do that for military-connected students is being held up as an example, and we will continue to do everything we can to enhance those supports.”

The Maryland General Assembly approved the Purple Star Schools Program in 2022, allowing the state to join 37 others across the nation.

“Our Purple Star Schools excel in serving the unique needs of our military-connected students and families,” Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools, said in making the announcement of this year’s honorees. “These school communities create welcoming environments, fostering a sense of support and belonging that provides the foundation for student success.”
