Quint Karlsson of Crofton Middle School outlasted 24 other school level spellers today at 38th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee to claim his third consecutive title.
Quint secured the championship by correctly spelling the word “tortillon” in the 22nd round. Arman Muhammad of Meade Middle School was second and Melina Tlemsani of Old Mill Middle School North finished third. To win the title, Quint had to outlast Arman in a spelloff at the end.
The county Spelling Bee is presented annually by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Office of Secondary Reading, English & Integrated Literacy. This year’s presenting sponsors were Educational Systems Federal Credit Union and CareFirst. The event’s co-sponsors were Development Facilitators, Inc., Horace Mann and M&T Bank.
For the third year in a row, Quint will proudly represent Anne Arundel County at the 101st National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., this May. His return to one of the nation’s most iconic academic competitions marks yet another thrilling milestone in his spelling journey.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a not-for-profit educational promotion sponsored by The E.W. Scripps Company in conjunction with businesses and community organizations around the world. Each sponsor organizes a spelling bee program in its community with the cooperation of area public, private, charter, parochial, and homeschool officials.
