Three county high school seniors who are planning careers in the United States military make up the fourth class of recipients of Military Service Awards, created by the Board of Education to honor the legacy the late Candace C.W. Antwine, a military veteran and former Board member who died in 2021.
The winners are:
Stance DeHaven, South River High School, who is enlisting in the Navy.
Kimberlin Orellano, Glen Burnie High School, who is enlisting in the Navy.
Nevaeh Queen, Old Mill High School, who is enlisting in the Army.
The awards are given to students each May to help remove barriers to enlisting in the military by assisting awardees with initial expenses, including basic training supplies.
“This is a small way for our Board and our community to recognize the commitment these young men and women are making to serve our country,” said Board of Education Member Dawn Pulliam, who chairs the award committee. “While I never worked with Ms. Antwine on the Board, I know of her passion for service both to our nation and to our communities. The Board is proud to carry on her legacy in this manner.”
Each of the recipients will receive $1,500.
Recipients will be honored at an event tonight and at the Board of Education’s next meeting on May 21, 2025. That meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.
