Arundel High School Team 1 amassed 435 out of a possible 500 points and took the top spot in three of four categories on the way to winning Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Envirothon competition recently.
The Envirothon is an international academic competition that challenges high school students in five core areas of environmental science: forestry, soils, aquatic ecology, wildlife, and a rotating current issue. This year’s issue was Roots and Resiliency: Fostering Forest Stewardship in a Canopy of Change.
Arundel’s team of Asima Abdul-Marteen, Peter Kim, Connor Ray-Dulany, Lance Stribley and Lillyanna Tussing will now represent Anne Arundel County at the annual Maryland State Envirothon. That event takes place June 11 and 12 at the Western Maryland 4-H Center in Swanton.
The county event featured 17 teams from seven AACPS schools. In addition to Arundel, Annapolis, Broadneck, North County, Northeast, the Center of Applied Technology North and South River high schools each fielded multiple five-student teams.
South River High School’s Team 1 also performed exceptionally well, winning the Wildlife and Fifth Issue categories and earning second place overall with a score of 427.
