Northeast High School senior Zhane Wiggins knew she was supposed to attend an assembly with her fellow seniors to hear representatives of the College Board speak about college scholarship opportunities. She soon found out that was only part of the story.

A few minutes into the assembly, College Board officials surprised Zhane with the news that she had won one of two monthly $40,000 BigFuture scholarships for completing key college and career planning steps. BigFuture is a free, online resource that helps students take the right first step after high school and personalize their plan for their future with resources to explore careers, plan for college, and pay for college.

4th graders at Cape St. Claire Elementary read a personal narrative about someone diagnosed with polio during the CKLA unit 1. To wrap up the unit they shared their personal narratives and played the board game Candy Land. Candy Land was created years ago by a polio patient for children stuck in hospitals with polio. #GrowAchieveCelebrateTOGETHER #TheFlockThatRocks

In just three years, Central Middle School’s all-girls engineering program — Cosmic Cobras — has seen a dramatic increase in participation. What began with around 10 girls has now grown to 30 students actively engaged in hands-on engineering challenges.

This growth reflects a powerful shift in interest and opportunity for young women in STEM. It also mirrors a critical challenge: Nationally, there continues to be a decline in female seat acceptance for advanced STEM tracks, and the workforce still struggles with underrepresentation of women in engineering and technology careers.

By fostering confidence, collaboration, and creativity early, programs like Cosmic Cobras help change that trajectory. The jump in participation shows that when you create intentional spaces for girls in STEM, they rise to the challenge. #BelongGrowSucceed #AACPSFamily #Engineering #EquityInEducation #FutureReady
