Three county schools have landed in the national spotlight with honors from Special Olympics North America for the ways in which they cultivate climates of kindness and acceptance by providing inclusive sports and programs for students with and without intellectual disabilities.
Old Mill Middle School South, Arundel High School and Glen Burnie High School have been named Special Olympics Unified Champion National Banner schools, adding to Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ (AACPS) stellar legacy dating back to 2010 with Special Olympics Maryland. Of the 19 schools in Maryland with the distinction, 12 are in AACPS. Old Mill Middle School South is the first middle school in Maryland to earn the award.

Please join GCE in celebrating our own Dan Fitzgerald this week for Community School Coordinator week! Community School Coordinator Appreciation Week is a nationally recognized event.
The community school strategy is not just about addressing needs - it is about building on the strengths and assets within each school community. Mr. Fitzgerald plays a unique and vital role at the forefront of this work, harnessing students, families, and community partners' unique resources, talents, and capacities to enrich the educational experience. By forging partnerships with both public and private sectors, he has created a web of support fostering academic and social-emotional development for students. Mr. Fitzgerald is at the heart of this strategy, and his daily efforts, both in the school building and throughout the broader community, are indispensable. Each day, he works to build strong, trusting relationships with families and students, connect with community partners to provide services, and acts as the eyes and ears of the school community. His ability to identify our school communities’ assets and needs allows him to respond effectively to challenges, helping families and students overcome barriers to attendance, learning, and success.
GCE has greatly benefited from Mr. Fitzgerald’s endeavors to create a strong and supportive learning community. We are so lucky to have him!
Respectfully,
Missy Morgan and Kayla Zipp
