Our Story

Bilingual Facilitators Ms. Villegas and Ms. Montenegro, with North Glen Elementary School admin and staff, held a great event on Thursday, May 7, Latina Moms at North Glen! Moms were engaged in interactive activities and meaningful conversations, reflecting on both the joyful and the more challenging aspects of motherhood. “Latina moms” were able to express themselves openly, connect, and build a sense of empathy and community. One mom shared a brief but powerful reflection on the challenges of motherhood and how, despite difficulties, we always find the strength to move forward. They also reflected on the improvement they would like to see at home and included some new healthy habits on their schedule. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Ms. Bocanegra for her continued support of our community; to Ms. Shafer for warmly opening the doors of North Glen to Latina mothers and for kindly caring for the children who accompanied them; and to Ms. Montenegro, who did not hesitate for a moment to attend the event and provide her support. The moms left with a deeper sense of belonging and ideas on how they can help their children grow and succeed!

After spending more than a quarter century as a teacher and school counselor with a focus and passion for serving at-risk students, Allison Mathews pulled her wealth of experience into a new role: Pupil Personnel Worker. For the last 11 years, she has approached every situation with expertise and empathy, working tirelessly to put in place meaningful solutions to help students and their families.

At Broadneck High School and now at Corkran Middle School, Mathews’ impact has been so profound it has earned her the 2025-2026 Maryland Pupil Personnel Worker of the Year award from the Maryland Association of Pupil Personnel.
