Hispanic Heritage Month
At Mayo we like to celebrate and learn about different heritages and traditions. September 15-October 15 we will be highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month! The National Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of culture and origin of Latinos and Hispanic Americans in the United States. The celebration coincides with national independence days of several Latin American countries including Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Chile and Belize. Hispanic Heritage Month is unique as it doesn't start and end within the same month. Instead, it starts on September 15 to honor the independence days of several Latin American countries and ends on October 15. #Belong #CelebrateDiversity #AACPSCelebrates

Text says Hispanic Heritage month with various flags surrounding words
🎉 Celebrating #HispanicHeritageMonth ! Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long observance in June 1968, introduced by Congressman George E. Brown and approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 17, 1968. In 1988, a bill championed by Senator Paul Simon and U.S. Representative Esteban E. Torres extended the celebration to a full 31 days. President Ronald Reagan signed this extension into law on August 17, 1988. On September 14, 1989, President George H.W. Bush officially declared the period from September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month. This timeframe honors the independence days of several Latin American countries: Mexico (September 16, 1810), Chile (September 18, 1810), Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (September 15, 1821), and Belize (September 21, 1981). #CelebrateDiversity #AACPSCelebrates
