This month, we’re excited to welcome our partners from Safe Routes to School!
Safe Routes to School is a nationwide movement focused on making it safe, convenient, and joyful for students to walk, bike, and roll to school. Research has shown that walking and rolling to school can increase students’ daily physical activity, improve concentration in the classroom, reduce traffic congestion, and help build stronger social connections.
During our Campus Conversation, families will learn more about Anne Arundel Safe Routes to School (AASRTS), share their ideas, and help us explore what Safe Routes to School could look like right here at Brooklyn Park Elementary.
Join us for breakfast, coffee, and conversation as we work together to make getting to school safer and better for our students.
Families who attend will be entered into a raffle for special giveaways!

Dear Families,
AACPS is updating its background check process for volunteers and chaperones as part of the school system’s continued efforts to strengthen safety and security for students and staff.
Beginning October 1, 2026, fingerprint-supported background checks will become the standard for AACPS volunteers and chaperones. We recognize that this is a change from the current process, so we want to clearly explain what this means for families who plan to volunteer or chaperone during the 2026–2027 school year.
What Is Changing?
Currently, many volunteers and chaperones have met the background check requirements by completing a commercial background check. As AACPS transitions to the new fingerprint-supported process, please review the following:
1) If you already have a valid commercial background check on file, it will remain valid until it expires. You do not need to immediately complete fingerprinting simply because the new process begins October 1.
2) If you would like to complete a commercial background check before the transition, you may do so through September 29, 2026.
3) Beginning October 1, 2026, anyone who needs a new background check will complete the fingerprint-supported background check rather than a commercial background check.
4) When an existing commercial background check expires, a fingerprint-supported background check will be required to continue volunteering or chaperoning.
Important Exception: Some Activities Require Fingerprinting
While an existing commercial background check may remain valid during the transition described above, certain volunteer and chaperone activities require a fingerprint-supported background check regardless of whether you currently have a valid commercial background check.
Fingerprinting is required for:
* All overnight volunteers or chaperones
* All Water Ready (formerly known as Drownproofing) volunteers or chaperones
* All Polar Bear Plunge volunteers or chaperones
* Any volunteer or chaperone with unsupervised or unrestricted access to children, including individuals working one-on-one or with small groups of students
If you plan to participate in one of these activities, a commercial background check alone will not meet the requirement. You will need to complete the fingerprint-supported background check.
Completing a Fingerprint-Supported Background Check
Fingerprinting must be scheduled through the AACPS Fingerprint Office at Central Office. The cost is $65. Once you successfully complete the fingerprint-supported background check, you will not need to complete a separate commercial background check.
Individuals who successfully complete the fingerprint-supported process will receive a pink Fingerprint Verification Card. Please keep this card for your records, as it serves as verification that you have completed the fingerprinting requirement. We will also need to obtain a copy of this card to keep on file at the school.
Planning to Volunteer or Chaperone? Please Plan Ahead
We expect that there may be increased demand for fingerprinting appointments as the October 1 transition approaches. If you know that you would like to chaperone a field trip or participate in an activity that requires fingerprinting, please begin the process well in advance. Waiting until shortly before an activity could result in your clearance not being completed in time to participate.
The key dates to remember are:
September 29, 2026: Last day to complete the current commercial background check process and remain eligible under the current requirements for the 2026–2027 school year.
October 1, 2026: New background checks will transition to the fingerprint-supported process.
Please remember that the activities identified above - including overnight trips, Water Ready, Polar Bear Plunge, and situations involving unsupervised or unrestricted access to students - require fingerprinting regardless of the transition timeline for existing commercial background checks.
We greatly appreciate the time, energy, and support our families provide to our students and school community. Thank you for planning ahead and helping us maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone.

What an incredible response we've had so far! We are so excited about the amazing turnout for our instrumental music programs. It’s wonderful to see so many of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders eager to learn an instrument. If your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader is even a little bit interested in joining the band or strings program, it’s not too late to submit a registration form and sign your student up for in-school, no-cost band/strings lessons!
***Nearly 50% of all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students have already signed up! This is an amazing turnout!
***School trumpets, trombones, and percussion are in short supply. All other instruments are still available to borrow! (Disregard if signed up before this message, or renting from a music store)

This no-cost, during-school program offers a wonderful opportunity for students to explore their musical interests and develop new skills by learning to play a musical instrument during the school day. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate! String Orchestra lessons are available to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, and Band lessons are available to 4th and 5th graders. All students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade attended the instrumental music program presentation(s) this week and had the chance to listen to a demonstration of the instruments available to them.

Campus Conversations at Brooklyn Park Elementary

This month, we’re excited to welcome our partners from Safe Routes to School!
Safe Routes to School is a nationwide movement focused on making it safe, convenient, and joyful for students to walk, bike, and roll to school. Research has shown that walking and rolling to school can increase students’ daily physical activity, improve concentration in the classroom, reduce traffic congestion, and help build stronger social connections.
During our Campus Conversation, families will learn more about Anne Arundel Safe Routes to School (AASRTS), share their ideas, and help us explore what Safe Routes to School could look like right here at Brooklyn Park Elementary.
Join us for breakfast, coffee, and conversation as we work together to make getting to school safer and better for our students.
Families who attend will be entered into a raffle for special giveaways!

Safe Routes to School es un movimiento nacional cuyo objetivo es lograr que el trayecto a la escuela —ya sea caminando, en bicicleta o en otros medios con ruedas (como patinetas o patines)— sea seguro, práctico y agradable para los estudiantes. Las investigaciones han demostrado que desplazarse a la escuela de estas maneras puede aumentar la actividad física diaria de los alumnos, mejorar su concentración en el aula, reducir la congestión del tráfico y ayudar a fortalecer los vínculos sociales.
