All-State Musicians Press Release

Posted by Melvin Edwards on 3/11/2021

Twenty-one Anne Arundel County Public Schools musicians and three Anne Arundel County Private School musicians have been named as the best in Maryland, earning All-State Honors and the right to participate in one of six ensembles. The county musicians were among about 600 across Maryland to earn a place in the All-State Junior Band, All-State Senior Band, All-State Junior Chorus, All-State Senior Chorus, All-State Junior Orchestra, and All-State Senior Orchestra.

Musicians from grades 7 through 12 were selected by a panel of 101 music educators from across Maryland after auditions in which they had to prepare and perform required music as set by the Maryland Music Educators Association, demonstrate proficiency on scales, and play an excerpt of music by sight-reading. To participate in the Maryland All-State Ensembles, a student must attend an independent (private), parochial, or public school in Maryland and be in 7-12 grade and enrolled in their school's band, chorus, or orchestra class.

“Students selected earn the recognition of being an All-State musician, which opens eligibility for students to audition for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-Eastern and All-National Honor Ensembles (ANHE). Additionally, all accepted Musicians will receive a PDF certificate, as well as a traditional medal, complimentary of MMEA. Students also have the opportunity to purchase t-shirts and masks.” – MMEA website

While there will be no performance opportunity for the 2021 ensembles, plans for next year’s All-State performances are underway.
