On March 9 from 4-6 p.m., join MSAC to experience phenomenal poetry and recitation mastery at Maryland’s 2021 Poetry Out Loud (POL) State Competition! At our virtual event, eight finalists will compete to represent Maryland at the 2021 National Poetry Out Loud Competition.

Colin Benedict, Severna Park High School (Anne Arundel Co.)

Ellie Heath, Severna Park High School (Anne Arundel Co.)

Joseph Griffin, River Hill High School (Howard Co.)

Kate Maerten, Gerstell Academy (Frederick Co.)

Katie Spencer, Indian Creek School (Anne Arundel Co.)

Participation in POL offers students the opportunity to learn about their literary heritage, build self-confidence, and improve their public speaking skills. Throughout the competition, students are evaluated on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, and overall performance. Last fall, participating students selected two eligible poems from the POL website, analyzed and memorized them, and submitted video recitations during Pre-Regionals. In February, the top 25 competitors moved on to Regionals. At the State Finals competition in March, the top 8 students will compete to determine the Maryland Champion representing our state at the 2021 National Poetry Out Loud Competition.
