Job title/department:

Animal Caretaker

Supervisor's name and title:

Kelly Brown, President, SPCA of Anne Arundel County

Lynn Gill, Volunteer Coordinator, SPCA of Anne Arundel County

Tell me about yourself:

I am a senior at Chesapeake High School. I am caring and compassionate about animals. I have been volunteering at SPCA of Anne Arundel County since May 2018.

Why did you choose to pursue an internship?

I want to work with animals, possibly as a Veterinarian Technician. The internship is a great opportunity to learn about animal care.

Daily internship duties:

Feeding and watering the animals. Keeping their cages clean and giving them fresh bedding. Socializing the cats. Talking about the SPCA and the adoption process with customers who come to Paws at the Mall.

Coolest project you worked on:

Learning about the different personalities of the cats.

One thing you have learned that you will take with you:

How the cats communicate with themselves as well as humans through their body language, and the relationships I have developed with the cats.

Best piece of advice you would give to a junior who is looking to pursue an internship:

Stay strong and pursue your dreams, even if the road is rough.

Describe one experience at your internship that you will never forget:

My interactions with Sophie Marie, one of the cats, as well as Rigby, a cat who only likes certain people, and I am one of them.

What are your plans after graduation?

Attend Anne Arundel Community College and a job working with animals.
