Guitarist Nate Stanley was recently selected as the High School Division winner of the U.S. Army Blues Solo Competition. Stanley, a junior at Broadneck High School in Arnold, is a student in the PVA program (performing & visual arts) and plays in the jazz band, guitar ensemble, and PVA house band.
In addition to his normal school activities, he is also active on the local music scene. Nate has led his own band, “The Wayward Locals” since 2015, according to the U.S. Army Band website. The Locals have appeared at music venues, festivals and private events throughout Maryland. An avid student of the jazz tradition, Nate regularly seeks mentorship from experienced professional musicians. He recently attended the National Jazz Workshop at Shenandoah University. He has appeared on numerous occasions with the Annapolis-based Unified Jazz Ensemble. Additionally, he plays electric and acoustic bass with the Anne Arundel Community College Jazz Ensemble.
The winning musicians will be featured with The U.S. Army Blues on April 28, 2019 in Brucker Hall, and April 29, 2019 in a special Jazz Appreciation Month concert on the Millennium Stage of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
