Annapolis HS Among Top Teams in State Culinary Competition

Maryland’s top high school culinary and foodservice management students competed in the Maryland ProStart Student Invitational (MPSI) on March 1st at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore. Teams competed for scholarship money and the opportunity to represent the State of Maryland at the national competition in Providence, RI. This state-wide championship is hosted by the Restaurant Association of Maryland Education Foundation (RAMEF).

Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Prince George’s County won the culinary competition and George Washington Carver Center for the Arts & Technology in Baltimore County won the management competition.

Each culinary team planned and cooked a three-course meal that was scrutinized by a panel of judges. They had one hour to prepare an appetizer, entrée and dessert from scratch. Judges scored on proper food safety and sanitation procedures, cooking methods, food taste, teamwork and menu difficulty.

In the management competition, students created a business proposal for a brand new restaurant. The proposal consisted of a defined restaurant concept, accompanying menu, restaurant layout, employee organization chart and a marketing plan to promote their new restaurant. Teams presented their concept to a panel of judges who scored them on their understanding of the restaurant industry, creativity, restaurant management knowledge and overall business acumen.

“Every student that competed put in a lot of hard work to be here today. Culinary arts and foodservice management are intense and highly skilled professions and these students showed that they are ready and eager for the challenge.” said Will Robinson, Chairman of the Board for the Restaurant Association of Maryland Education Foundation.

Participating teams are all a part of the nationwide ProStart® program implemented by more than 70 schools in Maryland. RAMEF, in partnership with the National Restaurant Association, established the program to prepare high school students for careers in the foodservice and hospitality industry.
