    In October of 2019, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) approved a change in the Code of Maryland Regulation (COMAR) that required school districts to develop new regulations that focused on educational equity. COMAR 13A.01.06 can be found here.

    According to MSDE, “Educational Equity” is:

    Granting every student access to the opportunities, resources and educational rigor they need throughout their educational career to maximize academic success and social emotional well-being and to view each student’s individual characteristics as valuable. The characteristics of each individual student include, but are not limited to, ability (cognitive, social emotional and physical), ethnicity, family structure, gender identity and expression, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economics.)

    MSDE has provided an Equity and Excellence: A Guide to Educational Equity in Maryland to serve as a road map for educators on how to apply an equity lens to all aspects of their work.
