Mission:

The mission of the Meade Heights Elementary School library is to strive to build on a robust academic foundation to foster a safe, joyful learning environment where students explore opportunities, discover their passions, and develop their skills.

Students attend weekly Media classes as part of the Cultural Arts schedule. Lessons are planned to ensure that Media lessons support classroom content and state curriculum standards.  Lessons include using the online library catalog and databases, literature appreciation, research skills, media/information literacy, and coding. Lessons and projects include content from Social Studies, Science, and other curricular areas.

To support the reading program, students choose books that meet their personal interests during weekly book circulation time built into the Media class. Students in PreK3-Grade 1 select one book each visit; students in Grades 2-5 select two books each visit. Students are asked to keep all library books in their backpacks or book bags at home when they are not reading them. The Meade Heights Elementary School library circulated more than 8,000 books and had more than 2,500 MackinVIA logins during the 2023-2024 school year!

Students in grades 2-5 will begin their library book clubs in February. Students read a self-selected book from the book club collection and keep the book in the classroom. After reading, students complete a reading comprehension activity. Students that want to read book club books at home can access books through MackinVIA (click on Groups and select the book club in which the student is enrolled).
