THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Wiley H. Bates Middle School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Wiley H. Bates's School Story

  • Wiley H. Bates Middle School has a rich history and heritage in the Annapolis area, as it initially was the site of the first African-American high school in Anne Arundel County.  Mr. Bates, the school’s namesake, donated the funds to purchase the land on which to build the Wiley H. Bates High School in 1933. By example, his character, stewardship, and community service remain as a lasting legacy for our students and community today.

Wiley H. Bates Middle School, currently a public middle school, is considered a hybrid magnet school, serving approximately 700 students - both local community students as well as students in our Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) program. Students accepted into our PVA program receive focused instruction in one of the following art disciplines: chorus, creative writing/theatre, dance, instrumental music, strings, or visual arts.  Equally important, Bates Middle School provides arts integration instruction to all students. Our school has been recognized nationally for our arts integration program, which infuses art standards into the content standards for each class. Our arts integration program allows equal access for all of our students to learn academic content through the lens of art.

The student population of Bates Middle reflects the communities in which our students and their families reside. Our current demographic representation includes 23% Black/African American students, 40% white students, and 31% Hispanic students. Approximately 44% of our student population has been identified as economically disadvantaged, and 30% of our students are bilingual.

The students of Bates Middle enjoy a diverse offering of academic and Magnet programs, with 21% of Bates students enrolled in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, 40% enrolled in our PVA program, and 17% enrolled in our English Language Acquisition (ELA) program of instruction. We are also home to an inclusive Regional Program for students with Emotional Disabilities and an inclusive Alternate Curriculum Class (ACC) program for students with special needs.

We value our population’s diversity; and, at Bates Middle, we consider this diversity to be a strength. On any given day one may see:

    • Artful Thinking and Arts Integration infused in instruction,
    • Emerging language learners engaging in classwork that allows them to learn content as they gain confidence in learning a new language,
    • Students collaborating to share ideas and complete inquiry-based learning tasks,
    • Support staff assisting students, and
    • Teachers designing and implementing lessons that are purposefully crafted to meet a variety of learning needs and styles.

At Bates Middle, we take pride in infusing all of the strong qualities of our school community that we call “One Bates”.
