THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023
Edgewater Elementary School
-
When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement. Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts. Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.
Edgewater Elementary's School Story
-
Edgewater Elementary opened its doors in 1953, just months after Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected President of the United States. We serve a moderate-sized waterfront community located along the South River near Annapolis, MD, in an idyllic setting with parks, mom and pop restaurants, storefronts, and tree-lined neighborhoods spanning all socio-economic and geo-political strata. Many roads lead to tributaries and rivers feeding the Chesapeake Bay, where watersports are enjoyed and ecological preservation is a priority. It is not uncommon to witness a plethora of wildlife, both flora and fauna, unique to the Chesapeake Bay as one drives or strolls along the roadways and bustling community sidewalks throughout Edgewater. In particular, the surrounding waterways offer nesting grounds to American Bald Eagles, making the Edgewater Eagle a natural and meaningful school mascot.
The Edgewater staff and community members are excited about the growing 600 student population of the school. The school is honored to welcome an increasingly diverse population of families with close to 31% of students representing a variety of backgrounds and inspiring Edgewater’s inclusive, student-centered culture that enriches the dynamic and welcoming school climate. Edgewater staff pride themselves on nurturing the growth and development of the whole child, encouraging a growth mindset in students, recognizing and encouraging students’ unique talents and abilities, and supporting learners at all levels. Students at Edgewater pride themselves on being a “Green School” and are actively engaged in pursuing a highly-coveted designation as an Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) school.

The Edgewater experience begins as you approach the steps leading up to the front portico, where homemade book-sharing libraries await any child or adult looking for complimentary books to take home. As visitors approach the main office, they are welcomed by three school secretaries whose adoration of our children and their families is evident through their warm, fun-loving personalities and authentic conversation, making all feel appreciated and valued. The school building is continuously abuzz with students eagerly visiting buddy classrooms, resource rooms, or the front office to announce their greatest achievements and to receive a token of support or a friendly hug or high-five for their outstanding efforts. A walk through the corridors of this friendly and inviting school is reminiscent of the quintessential elementary school experience with brightly painted lockers and colorful bulletin boards showcasing students’ talents and learning at Edgewater.
Peering into classrooms, it is evident that teaching is an active, hands-on, student-centered affair with students working as a whole class, in small groups, with partners, and one-on-one with their teachers. Lessons are designed with individual student needs at the forefront, a keen understanding of developmentally appropriate expectations, and an ethos that all students must be challenged every day with rigorous and engaging curriculum and resources. All students will succeed at Edgewater Elementary - no exceptions! Teachers can be heard praising students and providing specific, targeted feedback to ensure all students are ready and able to access learning and to help students see themselves as valued, integral members of their classroom community. Most importantly, Edgewater has developed the well-earned reputation as a fun place to work, learn and play.
Edgewater Elementary is a place where students and their families never really leave. Seasoned staff members will be sure to tell you that “Once an Edgewater Eagle, you are considered family and will always be cared for and loved by our school community.” Hallways, work rooms, the media center, and classrooms are filled with volunteers and community members who show up on a regular basis to support students and teachers, and who proudly claim they will never leave Edgewater, even after their own children move on to middle school, high school and beyond. Students often say they wish they could remain at Edgewater for all their schooling, and many return year after year to keep the staff apprised of all their achievements and accomplishments as they grow and mature.
