AACPS UNITES - CELEBRATING DIVERSITY IN LITERACY
AACPS Unites is a reading initiative that diversifies student literary experiences by reflecting and celebrating the diversity of the AACPS community.
Starting with Read Across America Day on March 2, 2021, monthly themes will be explored through book suggestions for all grade levels. These activities are supplmental to the academic framework; however, they are an awesome way to enhance the home-school connection and bring together our entire school community.
Be sure to share pictures on social media whenever you participate in an AACPS Unites activity and use #AACPSUnites.
Theme Concept: Mirrors, Windows, and Doors
Students should have opportunities to see themselves (mirrors) in their reading; see other experiences (windows) in their reading; and broaden their minds (door) in their reading. This overarching theme is inspired by Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, and is the motivation for the reading selections and activities that have been compassionately and carefully chosen to encourage student growth.

In 2018, the National Education Assocation (NEA), the originators of Read Across America, chose to expand the celebration of Read Across America so that it did not focus on one individual. NEA's theme this year, Create and Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers, perfectly aligns with AACPS Unites' goal to expand, expose, and experience literature as diverse as our school community.
