The PVA Strings Program at Bates focuses on developing students as artists who are able to effectively communicate ideas through their instrument. Over the course of three years in the program, students will focus on and build upon their instrumental technique, with emphasis on tone, articulation, rhythm, and dynamic and artistic range of expression. Students study music theory, history, and ear training, and are introduced to advanced techniques such as shifting and vibrato. A hallmark of the Bates PVA Strings program is it’s close collaboration with the Annapolis Symphony. Through the Adopt-A School Program and PVA Bates Strings students are offered private and group lessons , as well as coaching in chamber music and orchestral repertoire. Students are given many opportunities to perform as well as attend professional performances and Arts Experiences throughout the year. Bi-yearly larger field trips are taken to places such as New York City, where students can engage in such activities as watching a Broadway performance or participating in a workshop geared towards their content area. The year ends with the Bates String students participating in a special “Side by Side” concert with members of the Annapolis Symphony directed by Dr. Taylor and special guest conductors.
