Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend Monarch Global Academy Contract School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Monarch Global Academy Contract, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • Discipline Rates
    • Quarterly Assessments scores Mathematics
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Middle grades 6, 7, 8)

Key Challenge #1:  PARCC Scores - Mathematics (grades 3-8)

Academically, our scores on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) in Mathematics show that we are in line with Anne Arundel Country averages. The percent of students scoring 4s and 5s has increased each year, but our math scores have shown the least growth overall. As a school,  approximately 27% of our students are performing on grade level. Additionally, approximately 31% of the students in grades 6-8 met or exceeded grade level expectations on the Math portion of PARCC. Respectively, of the 294 students in grades 3-5, eighty-one (27%) met or exceeded grade level expectations on the Math portion of PARCC.

Our Math performance, however, is not where it should be. The Monarch Global Academy community recognizes the need to support students and teachers in the area of mathematics. The data clearly indicates which grade level and subgroups would benefit from remediation as well as enrichment. We know that our students are learning important math fundamentals that will carry toward success in future math courses and prepare them for their college and career goals. We also know that success on Math assessments indicates whether or not our students are adequately prepared for all of these next steps. Therefore, our goal is to have MGA students score above the AACPS average.

Our teachers work weekly with our Math Instructional Guides to plan rigorous instruction to increase student learning.  We implemented the First in Math program in January and Monarch Global Academy continues to be in the top 10% of schools in AACPS using the program.

  • Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges

    • Socio-Economic Issues (employment, income levels, housing costs)
    • Limited English proficiency for students and/or families

Key Challenge #2: Number of Limited English Proficiency students

Since opening in 2014, the percentage of English Learner (EL) students at Monarch Global Academy has increased each year. In middle school, 93% of our EL students are currently working towards meeting grade level expectations, and 96% of our elementary school EL students are currently working towards meeting grade level expectations. We know our EL students face added struggles as they work to master grade level content and skills. We also know that it is difficult to learn content and language simultaneously, causing many of our EL students to struggle on grade level assessments.

Therefore, professional development for staff in best strategies to help meet the needs of our EL students continues to be a focus. Staffing has been increased to provide services for our EL students. In addition, we have a cohort of 10 teachers who are in a master’s program at Towson that focuses on the best strategies to use with our EL students.

  • HISTORICAL SCHOOL & COMMUNITY CHALLENGES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE WRITING OF THIS SCHOOL'S STORY

    • Socio-economic community issues (employment, income levels, housing costs)
    • Significant changes over time in student/community demographics

Key Challenge #3:  Number of discipline referrals

The discipline referrals at Monarch Global Academy increased by 10% from the previous year; however, 96% of our students have received one or no referrals. Our Student Support Staff has increased to provide proactive services for our students, and continually work with our teaching staff to provide strategies for them to utilize. Additionally, school leadership intends to increase the use of Restorative Practices within the school.
