Strategic Plan Indicators

  • After each school leadership team reflected on its school culture, community, and the key contributing factors to student growth, they used this information to select the Strategic Plan Indicators that would have the greatest positive impact for their students.  Each school was directed to select two to six indicators on which to focus during the 2018-19 school year.  Certainly, we all know that if we focus narrowly and deeply, we are more likely to realize positive results.  The indicators that this school’s leadership team selected are noted below.

Strategic Journey

  • Throughout the next 3 years, schools will focus on their chosen Strategic Plan Indicators as the drivers to increase student engagement and achievement within their schools.  They will choose strategies to help them grow or increase within each indicator and will monitor and evaluate the student and school changes that take place along the journey.  Below you will see what this school imagines their students and school to look like in 2021 after having focused and worked on their chosen indicators for three years.

Our Vision of Success: 2021

  • Teachers and school leaders are working together to increase the number of students passing the Algebra 1 MCAP.  Our focus now and moving forward has been to identify those students achieving performance levels of 1, 2, or 3 (not meeting expectations, partially meeting expectations, or approaching expectations) and increasing performance levels to 4 or 5 (meeting or exceeding expectations). The teachers are working in collaborative teams to provide support based on need, as well as after school help sessions to ensure student success. All students are exposed to re-teaching and classroom instructional practices that allow them to practice the concepts until they achieve mastery.  Students will believe teachers are working hard to help them succeed, helping them to master content.  As a result of the above efforts, it is our goal for students to see growth in MCAP Algebra achievement by increasing the number of students who will score 4 and above.

In addition, teachers and school leaders are also working together to support 9th grade promotion.  Through embedding choice-driven overlay programs and by providing differentiated instruction in all classes, we are working to promote freshman achievement as they transition from middle into their first year in high school.  Through our program Falcon Flight, students with identified areas of concern such as excessive absence or low grades, receive additional academic support for all classes to support their learning.  Additionally, select freshmen take part in our Falcons Soar program, an Advisory program specifically designed to provide mentorship, goal-setting, and academic tracking for selected students.  Finally, our in-house Student Mentor program supports those freshmen students who transition to grades 10-12 who are earning below a 2.0 GPA. Through the latter efforts, we expect freshmen to be successful in raising our overall 9th grade promotion rate for all students.

Finally, students, staff, parents, and community members will feel valued and welcomed at Severna Park High School.  Our goal is to not only support students academically, but to provide social, emotional, mental, and physical wellness support to all students.  Our S.T.A.R. (Students Taking Actions Responsibly) program is designed to promote a positive and healthy learning environment for our school community by improving decision-making strategies, enhancing self-esteem, and increasing the use of mental health resources to prevent destructive behaviors.  The program encompasses monthly Advisory lessons throughout the school year, a STAR Week in April, mental health lessons in the Health curriculum (suicide prevention and depression), parent nights each fall and spring, and an annual student assembly with nationally renowned guest speakers.  By providing a safe, caring, and positive learning environment, students will thrive and become healthy, well-rounded individuals.
