Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.Benfield Culture

Benfield Elementary school is a collaborative environment with a focus on learning and engaging with our community.  Our teachers support each other, our students, and welcome parent volunteers into their classrooms. Benfield is a school where staff, students, and parents feel valued and respected.  Through the strong commitment of our parent volunteers and PTA, Benfield holds many school/community events and is able to provide enrichment assemblies for specific grade levels to enhance curriculum.   Our PTA supports the academic and social goals of our school and truly makes a difference for the students and staff. The many evening family events set us apart as a true community school.

Strengths beyond the academics are recognized and celebrated.  Our students are provided with many opportunities to engage in extra-curricular activities to excite their interests and talents in learning beyond the school day. For example, the Human Relations Committee is a student led group that supports various organizations such as the Anne Arundel County Food Bank and American Cancer Society. These activities motivate the artistic, physically active, environmentally aware students.  Creativity is fostered as well as increased rigor of instruction, student engagement, and depth of knowledge.

The staff at Benfield Elementary School continue to support students in their journey in connecting to their community, the school staff, and most importantly, to one another.   We believe in the value of teaching social-emotional skills that allow our students to interact in a positive way and engage in play collaboratively, using problem-solving strategies when conflict arises.   We use strategies learned from Dr. Recess to support good sportsmanship during recess so our students are able to engage in positive interactions and focus on healthy play. Students and staff recognize and celebrate positive actions through filling others’ buckets with positive affirmation.

Our staff has many years of experience teaching at Benfield Elementary.  Many of our teachers have taught at Benfield Elementary for at least ten years.  The Benfield families often describe the teachers as “part of their family.” Our students are connected with the community through sports, musical performances, scouts, and other activities.

CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
