Quarterfield Elementary School

Quarterfield

Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Students at math table Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

Establishing a caring culture is the foundation for any successful school. The key to this foundation at Quarterfield is having positive, productive relationships with all of our students.  We care deeply about our students, so our mindset is to “put kids first” in all that we do. Part of our work as educators is getting to know our students, their stories, and how we can work together to support goals for our students’ growth- socially, emotionally, and academically.

The building of positive relationships between and among students and staff is an important part of our everyday program here at Quarterfield Elementary. We are proud to continue to earn the PBIS Gold Award, the highest level of achievement, each year for our school’s PBIS program. We believe that the positive behavioral supports provided by PBIS lead to an overall school climate that contributes to student success. Recently, we have also implemented several new programs such as Responsive Classroom Strategies (Morning Meetings) and Restorative Practices to further improve our school culture at the classroom level. Through the Second Step program, all Quarterfield students participate in a variety of learning experiences that support social-emotional learning. Our classrooms are also set up to have a non-punitive “Calm Down Area” to help students step away from situations when they may be having a hard time coping.

We also have programs that encourage the academic development of our students. Quarterfield is an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) School. Our staff members have been trained in AVID, and through the AVID program, students are provided with strategies to develop their study skills and organization to become more effective learners in elementary school and beyond. Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, Quarterfield joins the ranks of AACPS schools designated for involvement in the Enhancing Elementary Excellence (Triple E) Program. Through a Project Based Learning approach, the Triple E Program encourages students to be inventors and innovators through interactive lessons that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Students meet with our Triple E STEM teacher weekly as part of their regular Cultural Arts schedule to study challenging and meaningful questions related to our world in the 21st Century.

Our dedicated, knowledgeable, and caring staff is committed to ensuring that each and every child at Quarterfield Elementary is respected, nurtured, and guided to make optimum academic and behavioral growth. We have an open door policy, we embrace opportunities for communication with families, and we encourage each parent and guardian to be an active part of their child’s educational journey. We know that it truly takes a village to raise each child.

CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
