Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Edgewater Elementary continues to experience a great deal of change due to our growing student numbers, our growing number of English Learners, and our school revitalization. Our students, staff, families, volunteers, and community partners apply creative problem-solving strategies to meet the needs of our students, families, and staff. We work collaboratively with our Bilingual Facilitator to engage our Spanish-speaking families in school-based events and learning. Our students and staff shine through these challenges and changes.
Our classrooms remain active learning spaces. Bookshelves are located throughout our school and on our front steps to encourage and support student and family literacy. We have a summer bookmobile to encourage our students to read through the summer months. Paws for Reading allows opportunities each week for students to practice reading by reading to our volunteer dogs. Edgewater is dedicated to growing readers as evidenced by the motto “Eagles that read together- succeed together!”
We strive to make the students, families and community members feel connected to school. We have fostered relationships with community partners, PTA, and families. Our students are members of three houses and participate in Buddy Classes to increase their connections to our staff, their classmates, students in their buddy class, and our school. Mentors are provided to students who lack connections in our school. We will focus on developing ourselves and our students into great team members through the book studies, Hard Hat and Hard Hat for Kids. Our PBIS team works collaboratively with staff, students, and families to develop student empathy, reflectiveness, and personal responsibility.

We provide needed supports to identified families through collaborative partnerships. These supports include Backpack Buddies (food for the weekend), school supplies, winter coats, clothing, holiday help, and counseling services. Members of the Southern District of Anne Arundel County Police Department interact with our students through monthly lunches, serving as field day volunteers, and programs such as Shop with a Cop and bicycle safety. The South County Rotary Club donates dictionaries each year to our third grade students, facilitates the STAIR program for identified grade 2 students, and supports the Backpack Buddies program.
Teachers, support staff, parents and community members frequently state they have never been to a school with such big hearts and giving spirits as they have found at Edgewater. It will not take long for anyone who cares to see: It is the unyielding passion for life-long learning, a school vision of elevating all students, a devotion to growing young leaders, and the goal of building student fortitude that makes Edgewater Elementary the most wonderfully special school in the world.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
