Davidsonville Elementary School

Davidsonville

Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

Multi-cultural friends Davidsonville Elementary is committed to providing a safe, caring and rigorous learning environment. Students are greeted by each adult they encounter when arriving to school. Through daily journal writing, students are provided opportunities to share and celebrate their experiences and views with their teachers and peers.  Strong relationships, our character education program, parent outreach efforts, opportunities for choice and collaboration, celebrations of diversity through history, art and literature, as well as deliberate equitable practices support our Davidsonville Gators in feeling safe and valued at school.

Davidsonville Elementary earned the MSDE Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) Award in 2013 and earned EGATE Recertification in 2019.  As a Maryland EGATE school, we are recognized for our excellence in student identification, curriculum and instruction, professional development, program management and evaluation as it supports our most gifted and advanced learners.

Davidsonville Elementary staff members enjoy a work environment that provides recognition, inspiration, comradery, and fun.  Many of our experienced teachers have been at Davidsonville Elementary for years, creating strong instructional teams. Collaboration among teachers supports implementation of differentiated instruction, research-based strategies, and a variety of instructional practices and resources.

Volunteers routinely donate their time and resources in support of the students and families of the Davidsonville community. On any given school day, one is likely to encounter parents or grandparents reading to a class, helping in the computer lab, organizing in the library, or planning a special evening event. Our Davidsonville Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) generously supports our teachers, students, and families in many ways, including funding field trips and providing classroom supplies. Through the generosity of our PTO, students in grades 3-5 now have individual Chromebook access. Our PTO also facilitates many  before- and after-school clubs, including an annual musical production, robotics, and fitness.

We are also proud of our community support for those within and beyond our schoolhouse. Recently, some members of our community have been impacted by family illnesses and medical crises;  and our school community rallied together to support them. In addition, through participation in annual campaigns, our school community donates countless hours and thousands of dollars toward the work of local and national organizations, such as the American Cancer Society (Relay for Life), the Maryland Food Bank (Harvest for the Hungry), the American Heart Association (Jump Rope for Heart), and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (Pennies for Patients).

CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
