Key Challenge #1: LEP (Limited English Proficiency)During the past 8 years, there has been an increase in the number of EL students that have enrolled at our school. In 2011, Rolling Knolls Elementary served 32 students. In 2018, Rolling Knolls Elementary served 85 English Language Learners. Many of the parents of these students do not speak English and require a bilingual facilitator or translation service.Teachers try to support the ELL population as much as they can but often lack the tools necessary to help them understand the content being taught.

Key Challenge #2: PARCC Scores English/Language Arts(Elementary Grades 3,4,5)
During the past three years, 0% of our EL students have scored a level 4 or 5 on the ELA PARCC assessment. This deficit in this particular student group led to a focused action step for our school. To address this concern as a school team, we have created and implemented a year-long professional development for our staff to increase their instructional strategies when working with EL students through the use of the SIOP model. In addition, we have established an ELL afterschool homework club to provide additional support for our EL students with academics.
While PARCC results demonstrated that 58% of students scored a 4 or 5 in English/Language Arts; 0% of English Language Learners scored a 4 or 5. In 2nd grade all students should be reading on or above grade level, 57% of students were reading on or above grade level while 19% of English Language Learners demonstrated on or above grade level reading skills on the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark System.
Performance on PARCC in English/Language Arts has shown the following trends:
- During the 2015-16, 57% (89/156) non-EL students earned a 4 or 5 on the PARCC and 0% (0/12) EL students earned 4 or a 5.
- During the 2016-17 school year, 63% (102/163) non-EL students earned a 4 or 5 on the PARCC while 0% (0/6) EL students earned 4 or a 5.
- During the 2017-18 school year, 58% (91/157) non-EL students earned a 4 or 5 on the PARCC while 0% (0/33) EL students earned 4 or a 5.
