Grading: Redo Policy & Practices
Please take a look at the grading resources for background reading on this topic. Feel free to discuss the following questions with teachers in your schools and bring back their thoughts and ideas for discussion at our October 10, 2016 Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory meeting.
Questions to be considered:
- How do teachers feel about the new “Redo” practices available to students this year?
- Are there any challenges teachers are encountering? If yes, how are they handling the challenges?
- Do teachers or schools need support related to the new redo practices we have put in place? If yes, what supports would be helpful?
- Are there any best practices from teachers in your schools that should be shared with other teachers around the county?

New Elementary Curriculum

Questions to be considered:
- How do K-2 elementary teachers feel about the new K-2 curricula this year? Specifically, how are they feeling about the student-centered daily mission philosophy of the new curriculum, infusion of science and social studies into the daily schedule, inclusion of movement (move, move, move) and structured play into the daily schedule, the new guided reading strategies, and the inclusion of coding into the world of the young child?
- How do they feel about the professional development they received over the past year?
- Are there any specific challenges teachers are encountering? If yes, how are they handling the challenges?
- Do elementary teachers or schools need additional support related to the new K-2 curriculum we have put in place? If yes, what supports would be helpful in the next two months?
- Are there any best practices from elementary teachers in your schools that should be shared with other K-2 teachers around the county?

- How do teachers feel about “good faith effort”? How may they feel if we remove “good faith effort” from the policy?
- Are there any challenges teachers are encountering? If yes, how are they handling the challenges?
- Are there any best practices from teachers in your schools that should be shared with other teachers around the county?

Valedictorian & Salutatorian vs. Latin Honors (Cum Laude) Honors Recognition
Please take a look at the Honors Recognition resources for background reading on this topic. Feel free to discuss the following questions with teachers in your schools and bring back their thoughts and ideas for discussion at our November 28, 2016 Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory meeting.
Questions to be considered:
- How do teachers feel about moving from a Val/Sal Honors recognition for seniors to a Latin Honors (Cum Laude) recognition system?
- We are proposing to use both honors recognitions for the Classes of 2017 and 2018. Then, beginning with the Class of 2019, current sophomores, we are proposing to move totally to the Latin Honors recognition system; there will be no Val/Sal recognition. How do teachers feel about this timeline?

Challenging Student Behaviors
Feel free to discuss the following questions with teachers in your schools and bring back their thoughts and ideas for discussion at our January 9, 2017 Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory meeting.
Questions to be considered:
- What challenging student behaviors, if any, are teachers in your school experiencing this year?
- Are your teachers feeling like this year’s challenging student behaviors have increased from prior years? Are there any differences in the types of challenging behaviors that your teachers are experiencing this year?
- Does your school have any best practices that are used when dealing with challenging student behaviors that could be shared with other schools?

AACPS FY18 Budget
On February 13, 2017 Chief Operating Officer, Alex Szachnowicz, will offer a 30 min budget presentation to the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Group. Following his presentation, Dr. Arlotto and Mr. Szachnowicz will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding the budget.

On March 13, 2017 we will engage in a 45 min strategic planning session with the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Group. Following his presentation, Dr. Arlotto will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding our AACPS strategic planning process.
