The 527 graduating seniors in Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ AVID program were offered a combined $40 million in scholarships and grants for college, the program’s coordinator told the school board Wednesday.
Advancement Via Individual Determination is a college preparatory program that teaches students study skills, SAT prep and organization. The program also directs students to more rigorous courses and helps students navigate financial aid and college applications.
“They all commit. They all work hard. We love to see them valued for the work they put in,” she said after her presentation.
Soon-to-be graduates of Old Mill High School Jasmine Gray and Baylie Webb were both recognized, and both will be first-generation college students.
Gray is headed to Morgan State to study biology. Webb is headed to University of Maryland, Baltimore County to study math.
“They really are fulfilling their own dreams, but also the dreams and hopes of the families,” said Emily Gordon, AVID coordinator for Old Mill High.
