Welcome to the Odenton Elementary Community!
ENROLLING YOUR CHILD AT OES
Students must attend the school in the area in which their parent or guardian lives.
To see if OES is your home school CLICK HERE.
The following information is needed for ALL registrations:
- Residency Verification (two documents): A lease, deed or mortgage statement (must have one of these) and some other official document with name and address (utility bill preferred).
- Transfer papers from previous school. If you do not have this, please bring in the latest report card along with the name, address and phone number of the previous school.
In addition to the above, students new to Anne Arundel County must have
- Birth certification
- Immunization records. *Check immunization requirements at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/.
Parents who have court-awarded custody of their child must have the custody papers on file in the school office; otherwise the school must release a child to either natural parent.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS & TELEPHONE
It is extremely important that every parent maintain an up-to-date address and working telephone number record at the school office. Please notify the school immediately if there is a change.
Please inform the office as soon as you know you will be withdrawing your child from Odenton.
It takes 48 hours to process withdrawal information.
The information the office needs is:
- Student's name
- Teacher's name
- Last day student will be at Odenton
- Name of school (if in Anne Arundel County) student is going to - or city and state if moving out of Anne Arundel County
- Please supply us with your new address, especially for the 4th marking period. Report cards are sent from the Board of Education.
Withdrawal papers will be sent home with the student on their last day of school. If you prefer to pick them up, please inform the office.
Doors open at 9:10 a.m. for students who are getting a school breakfast. All other students are admitted into the building at 9:15 a.m. At 9:35 a.m. attendance is taken and instruction begins.
Children arriving after 9:35 a.m. are considered tardy and must report to the office accompanied by an adult to get a late pass. If they do not report to the office, they may be marked absent for the day. It is required that an adult accompany the student to the office to sign them in.
When students are marked absent, parents will receive an automated phone call to confirm the absence. Please send in a note with your child after an absence has occurred, within 3 days of returning to school. Notes received after 3 days cannot be excused.
Attendance is a critical factor in any child’s school success. Children should attend school every day, except in cases of illness or emergency. Regular attendance and promptness are good habits that are expected and appreciated at all levels of schooling.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DISMISSAL
Dismissal begins at 4:00 p.m.
IF THE DISMISSAL PLAN FOR YOUR CHILD CHANGES AT ANY TIME, PLEASE NOTIFY THE OFFICE DIRECTLY AT 410-222-6514 OR BY SENDING A WRITTEN NOTE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND NO LATER THAN 3:45 P.M. ON THE DAY THE CHANGE IS TO OCCUR. WITHOUT A WRITTEN OR VERBAL REQUEST FROM AN ADULT AUTHORIZED TO MAKE DISMISSAL DECISIONS, YOUR CHILD WILL BE DISMISSED ACCORDING TO THEIR REGULAR DISMISSAL PLAN, WITHOUT EXCEPTION.
When a child is to be dismissed from school early (prior to 3:45), the parent or designated adult must come to the office, present valid identification, sign the early dismissal book and then wait by the office for the child to come from the classroom. If you send someone to the school without notifying the office of the change, we cannot release your child to that person.
TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD, WE MUST ADHERE TO THESE POLICIES.
An EXCEPTIONAL TRANSPORTATION REQUEST is available from the office for any special transportation needs (such as pick up by a temporary babysitter).
INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES
Please complete the “emergency dismissal” form and return it to school promptly. Schools may be closed early in the event of a snowstorm, flooding, or loss of electricity or water. Please make certain your child is aware of his/her plan for early dismissal days, which may be different from their regular routine. Buses and Open Door should operate normally.

Upon arrival at the building, ALL NON-STAFF VISITORS will be asked to buzz in at the call box by the main entrance (facing the main parking lot) and state their reason for entering the building. Upon entering, every visitor must report to the Main Office, provide a photo ID and wear an individualized identification sticker while in the building. Visitors in the building without a V-Soft sticker will be asked to return to the Main Office. Please remember to check out in the office when you leave the building.
FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF AND VISITORS, IT IS CRITICAL THAT ALL VISITORS FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE. PLEASE DO NOT HOLD ENTRANCE DOORS OPEN FOR OTHERS. IF YOU ARE AT THE ENTRANCE, PLEASE DIRECT ALL VISITORS TO BUZZ IN AT THE CALL BOX.
The staff at Odenton Elementary maintains communication with parents through parent conferences, phone calls, email and messaging through the ClassDojo application. At the start of the school year, your child’s classroom teacher will send home directions for connecting to their ClassDojo account.
Additionally, teachers in all grades use the weekly Wednesday Work Folder (WWF), and teachers in Grades 4 and 5 use a Daily Journal (DJ) and to share information and communicate concerns and celebrations about your child's progress. Please check your child’s DJ and WWF for notes from his or her teachers. Parents can also communicate with teachers by writing notes in the DJ or WWF.
In accordance with AACPS policy, OES students are to dress in clothes that promote a safe and respectful learning environment. Clothes that create a disruptive environment, cause a health or safety hazard, or that do not align with the rules established by the respective school are not appropriate and not acceptable at school. School personnel will enforce this dress code. Headwear is permitted only for health, safety, or religious reasons. Footwear must be safe and secure. Flip-flops and any shoes that impede a student’s ability to move safely throughout the building are prohibited.
