What Is National Board Certification?
National Board Certification (NBC), offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, recognizes the accomplished teaching that is occurring in classrooms in the United States. The certification process is the highest form of professional learning and is based on rigorous standards that evaluate teaching practices through performance-based assessments; the result is improved performance and achievement for students.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standard's mission is to advance the quality of teaching and learning. At the heart of the NBC process are standards that explain the highest level of teaching in different disciplines and with students at different developmental levels. These standards represent a consensus among accomplished teachers and other education experts about what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.
How Do Teachers Achieve National Board Certification?
The assessment process for National Board Certification requires candidates to complete an extensive portfolio of classroom practice including samples of student work and videotapes of teacher instruction, and an assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center. Three portfolio components focus on specific rubrics that are based on the National Standards for each subject area. The portfolio components focus on how students learn and require teachers to reflect on their teaching pedagogy and practice. The four-part assessment component exam is based on their depth and breadth of content knowledge and is taken after the portfolio is completed. This process can take most of a school year and may even take up to three years. It involves approximately 200–400 hours of work outside of the classroom.
Achieving National Board Certification is the end of the process, but it is also the beginning of a journeyDr. Susan R E Malone, NBCT
