Design Explorations Course Descriptions
Students learn how to apply a design based model to approach, understand and solve complex real-world challenges utilizing both traditional and outside the box design thinking perspectives in an innovative, interactive, collaborative environment.
Students attend field trips, explore careers and colleges of interest, and interact with current working professionals in order to experience real-world challenges that provide students with practical knowledge and a pathway for future explorations.
Course topics include: design thinking, graphic design, media design, urban planning, watershed management design, architecture, agriculture design, and landscape design.
Environmental Design infused within Signature!
Design teaches students how to achieve environmentally sustainable outcomes through innovative design concepts such as: eco-design, design for purpose, design for behavior and systems design.

Graduation Signature Endorsement
Do you want to be part of the first Southern Signature Graduation group? Have you taken Design Explorations I, joined a club, participated in Signature Clubs or Co-Curricular experiences and either completed a Capstone, College Course or Internship by your graduation? If so, you could be part of the first class! Signature Endorsement students receive a certificate signed by community business partners, networking experiences and a possible Signature Design: Preservation & Innovation graduation cord. Field Trip Information
Signature Career Experience Field Trips give opportunities to all Southern High students to engage in real-world Design situations at local businesses. Signature Career Experiences are free to students; sponsored by the Rotary Club of Southern Anne Arundel County, the businesses or organizations we visit and the SHS Signature Program Design: Preservation & Innovation.
