Select AACPS kindergarten students will participate in the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment.
Measuring Growth in Reading
To measure student growth in reading, we use the Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) System. The F&P is used to determine student’s independent and instructional reading levels. Teachers work with students individually and allow students to read to teachers in a one-on-one environment. This dedicated, individual time allows teachers to observe individual student reading behaviors, engage in comprehension conversations that go beyond retelling, and make informed decisions that connect assessment to instruction. Teachers use the results from the F&P system to support students in their efforts to become independent readers.
Although teachers use the results of these assessments to determine next steps for students, F&P does not affect a student's grade and should not be thought of as a "test."
Measuring Growth in Mathematics
Teachers have the option of using the district math "checkups" to measure student growth in mathematics or teachers may choose to create their own mathematics assessments. There are no mandated mathematics assessments in Grades K-1.
F&P Assessment Schedule and Time
During the 9 months of schools, students will spend approximately 1 hour participating in the F&P Reading Monitoring Program.
During each administration, each student will spend approximately 30 minutes reading one-on-one with his/her teacher in order for the teacher to closely monitor student progress in reading.
The administration dates are as follows:
- Winter Administration -- January 22 -- February 28
- Spring Administration -- May 1 -- June 12
