Your prescription plan contains four tiers of medications (from least to most expensive):

Tier 1:  Generic - drugs which are chemically identical to brand-name drugs and meet the same standards of the FDA but are less expensive

Tier 2:  Preferred Brand - brand-name drugs which are categorized as preferred and are less expensive than non-preferred brand

Tier 3:  Non-Preferred Brand - drug sold by a drug company under a specific name that is protected by a patent, not on the preferred drug list

Tier 4:  Specialty - high-cost drugs not limited to oral, topical, injectable, etc routes of administration, treating complex disease states.  For AACPS employees, limited to self-administered injectables (excluding insulin).

A drug formulary is a list of drugs that are approved to be prescribed under a particular health insurance policy.  A tiered formulary assists employees in identifying which medications are covered and into which tier they fall.  If you want to save money on your prescriptions, review the formularies on the right and discuss alternatives with your physician.Save
