Overview

  • Parents may choose to educate their children at home, rather than enrolling them in a traditional public or private school.  AACPS supports home instruction in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations known as COMAR.

  • The ABCs of State Requirements for Home Instruction

    1. Parents must notify the local public school system of their decision to home-school each student. Each year, they must notify the school system of their decision to continue or discontinue home schooling.

    2. Students must receive regular, thorough instruction from the parent in each of the following subjects:
      • Reading/Language arts
      • Mathematics
      • Social Studies
      • Science
      • Art
      • Music
      • Physical Education
      • Health (May be incorporated through science or physical education)  
      • Students in grades 9-12 may substitute alternative electives of choice for art, music, and physical education.

    3. Home instruction must be supervised, either by the local public school system or by a private organization approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.

  • End-of-Year Home Instruction Program Reviews will be held during the months of May and June.  In order to maintain compliance with Home Instruction, all AACPS-supervised families are required to particpate in a review at the end of each semester.  We are pleased to offer multiple dates, times and locations, as well as the convience of scheduling through the online platform, Sign Up Genius.  The last date of reviews for the 2017-2018 academic year is June 12, 2018.  Please sign up early and honor your review date and time.  If you have multiple students, please sign up for an individual time slot for each child in Sign Up Genius.

  • If you are new to home schooling and plan to home school your child/ren in the 2018-2019 school year, please submit your Home School Notification Form beginning July 16, 2018.
