Virtual Learning During Inclement Weather

  • Virtual Learning

Under a plan approved by the Board of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education, Anne Arundel County Public Schools may offer virtual learning on days of inclement weather and allow those days to count toward the 180-day minimum school requirement mandated in state law. In such instances, AACPS has two options:

    Virtual Synchronous Learning

All AACPS schools and school buildings are closed. Students will engage in real-time virtual instruction with their teachers. Schools will begin instruction at 9 or 9:15 a.m., as listed on schedules that can be found at www.aacps.org/studentschedules. Students must log in and participate in classes to be counted present. Students will receive a message with specific instructions from their school. With the exception of certain Unit III personnel, all AACPS employees will work remotely. Unit III personnel must report to their work locations as required.

    Virtual Asynchronous Learning

All AACPS schools and school buildings are closed. Students will independently engaged in posted prerecorded virtual lessons at a time of their choosing. Students should access lessons in their Brightspace accounts and must log in by 2 p.m. to be counted present for the day. With the exception of certain Unit III personnel, all AACPS employees will work remotely. Unit III personnel must report to their work locations as required.

Announcements will be made through normal AACPS communication channels, including Connect-ED, email, text message, this website (www.aacps.org) and social media.

      • Inclement Weather Days becoming virtual instruction days will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the Superintendent of Schools, who will make the decision as to whether or not an inclement weather day will be used as:
        • a traditional snow day
        • an synchronous Virtual Instruction Day, or
        • an asynchronous Virtual Instruction Day
      • AACPS can repurpose up to eight days for virtual instruction, with no more than three days being asynchronous instruction.
      • At least four hours of instruction for synchronous virtual days.
      • No more than three virtual days will be used in any single marking period.
      • No student’s grade will be negatively impacted by a virtual day. Students must be provided with meaningful in-person opportunities for instruction.
      • Whenever the forecast makes it possible, the school system will announce the intention to utilize a virtual instructional day in advance.
