Groups for Parents of Gifted and Talented Children
Gifted/Talented/Advanced Programs Parent Academy
All
parents/guardians are invited to attend regular evening meetings on
topics related to gifted education and programming in Anne Arundel
County Public Schools. The G/T/AP Coordinator and Resource Teachers
cover topics of interest concerning both elementary and secondary
school students.
MCGATE (Maryland Coalition for Gifted and Talented Education)
This
organization offers support for parents in working with school
officials and for teachers through networking and the encouragement
of teacher training. They work with government and other
agencies to support efforts in funding gifted education. They hold
monthly meetings and publish a newletter. To join MCGATE or

& Talented Programs in the State of Maryland
CTY - The
Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth:
Children who demonstrate above average abilities may be
recommended by teachers to test for identification in the
Hopkins IAAY program. Seventh and eighth graders who
have been recommended by their teachers or parents may take
the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). Those with scores
that meet the criteria will have opportunities to participate
in the Hopkins program. For more details, click
here. Fifth and sixth graders who
demonstrate above average abilities may be recommended for the
PLUS test (Academic Abilities Assessment.) For more

Maryland
Summer Centers: Special programs have been developed
by the Maryland State
Department of Education to enhance and expand the local
programming for gifted and talented students. These summer programs
offer an intensive experience working with resources, settings, and
instructional formats not available during the regular school
year. These programs are held at Maryland colleges and

Competition Sponsored by the Maryland State Department of
Education
Destination ImagiNation®
Destination
ImagiNation, sponsored by MSDE, is a competitive program for
students at all levels to engage in problem solving and divergent
thinking. There are two
components, “Instant Challenges” and “Team Challenges” that
can be organized at the school by dedicated volunteers that include
parents and educators. Teams
may present their solutions at local, regional and state
competitions and conclude at an annual Global Final event.
This year’s
Destination ImagiNation Regional Tournament is scheduled for March
19th at Old Middle School South.
