Advanced Studies and Programs

Advancement Via Individual Determination Program (AVID)

AVID is an academic program designed to provide support to students who are in the “academic” middle. This elective is currently being offered to students in grades 6 through 12, with some pilot elementary schools offering it to 5th grade students. (read more)

Collaborative Decision Making (CDM)

To ensure that the needs of every student are met, today’s schools are using a collaborative process to identify student strengths and weaknesses, design and document progress on academic and behavioral interventions, and share responsibilities for all students. This change is required by the No Child Left Behind Act and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004. Schools are becoming more proficient at using various forms of student data to appropriately differentiate instruction and to design instructional goals based on the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum. Gifted/Talented/Advanced Placement Programs (GT/ TD/ AP)

Children and adolescents have many talents and gifts. The G/T/AP program open doors for students, affording them opportunities to develop their talents and gifts, and enrich their lives.  Exploration occurs in the classroom and through participation in special programs.  (read more)

Home Schooling

Anne Arundel County Public Schools supports home schooling in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.10.01.  Our mission is to promote quality education for all Home Schooled students through thorough, consistent parental instruction. (read more)

International Baccalaureate/Extended Learning Program (IB/MY/MYP)

The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. (read more)

           Magnet & Signature Programs

Anne Arundel County Public Schools currently offers Magnet Programs at several of its middle and high schools.  Over the next several years the school district will be increasing the number of magnet and signature programs offered in K-12 schools throughout the county. Performing & Visual Arts Magnet Program (PVA)

Anne Arundel County’s first Performing and Visual Arts Magnet will open its doors at Wiley H. Bates Middle School in the Fall of 2009 with approximately 100 sixth graders and 50 seventh graders as its first students.  These students will come from communities within the following school feeder systems:  Annapolis, South River, Southern, Broadneck, and Severna Park. (read more)

Science*Technology*Engineering*Mathematics Programs (STEM)

Anne Arundel County Public Schools offer suites of STEM academic and co-curricular offerings for pre K-12 students during the academic year and summer months to enrich and enhance learning, build STEM career awareness and engage students in challenging STEM-related projects and events. (read more)

Smaller Learning Communities (SLC)

The Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) Grant is a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to restructure five high schools into smaller units, called career clusters. The goals of the project are to enhance academic achievement, increase academic rigor, and create a better school climate.  (read more)
