BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES PRESCRIPTION DRUG COVERAGE CONTRACT THAT SAVES $10.8 MILLION

The current CVS Caremark contract expires on December 31, 2012. The new contract allows for up to five one-year extensions beyond the initial three-year term.

The new contract provides for:

  • expanded clinical programs to assist AACPS in managing costs and
  • promoting generic drugs where available.
  • closer coordination of pharmacy programs with AACPS health and
  • wellness objectives.
  • the continued use of the CVS pharmacy network for 90-day maintenance medications at mail-order prices

“CVS Caremark has been a valuable long-term healthcare partner with our school system, and this contract enables us to be able to continue to provide comprehensive benefits at improved discounts for our employees,” Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said. “We are pleased that, especially in this difficult financial climate, we have been able to lead the charge in this effort and that the county government will be teaming with us to realize savings of its own.”

Said County Executive John R. Leopold: “We are pleased that our negotiating team was able to again realize significant savings when it comes to employee and retiree healthcare. This new contract will provide excellent benefits for our employees and also save money.”
