Dance Teacher of the Year and Simon McNeely Awards – October, 2015

Chase Haglund, Dance Teacher at North County High School, was selected by the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education and Dance as the 2015-2016 Dance Teacher of the Year.  In addition to teaching dance at North County, Chase direct the North County High School Dance Company and Junior Company and performs with Impulse Movement Project. Chase will go on to represent Maryland regionally.

Jennifer Mossburg, Dance Teacher at Arundel Middle School, and Marina Thompson, Dance Teacher at Southern Middle School were presented with Simon McNeely Awards.  These award recognize outstanding teachers for their contributions to Dance Education at their school.

Dancers from Broadneck Elementary School (directed by Colleen Rowe), AACPS Middle School Ensemble (directed by Kassi Mattera and Marina Thompson) and AACPS High School Ensemble (directed by Mattie Fenton and Chase Haglund) performed pieces relative to the conference theme "The Arts and Social Justice".


Honor societies are established through the National Dance Education Organization for the purpose of promoting and honoring artistic achievement in dance students 11-18 years of age, encouraging well-rounded young dance artists to be leaders in their communities, and to identify honor students for nomination to the NDEO's Artistic Merit, Leadership, and Academic Achievement Award (one of the highest honors' programs in the United States).

Students earn points for induction and accrue points over years of study.  Seniors graduate with honors and wear honor cords and gold honor pins in high school graduation ceremonies.

All of our high schools, Brooklyn Park Middle, and Lindale Middle have Honor Societies.

Bates Middle Adopt-A-Dancer Program
Bates Middle School has an Adopt-A-Dancer program to help dancers with the cost of class clothing and costumes.  For information and to help, please contact Kassi Mattera ( or Jody Tiburzi (, the dance teachers at Bates.

AACPS High School Dance Ensemble 2016-2017
The high school Dance Ensemble is directed by Mattie Fenton and Kaye Richards.
Auditions will be held early in the fall.  Dancers must be a member of their home school's Dance Company.

National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Conference - October 5-10, 2016, Arlington, VA
Judi Fey, Dance Consultant, will be presenting a session about advocating and marketing dance programs.
AACPS teachers attending are Nicole Deming, Liz Quinones, Caitlin Rose, and Georgia Speier

NEW! Maryland Dance Education Association - Established in 2016
Maryland has a new Dance Education Association affiliated with NDEO and will hold it's first conference on October 21, 2016 at Towson University.  The new organization was formed in response to a growing number of dance educators in Maryland (K-12, higher ed, professional, public and private) feeling the need to have an organization dedicated to dance education and providing local professional development.  The board consists of Judi Fey, Suzanne Henneman, Karen Kuebler, and Sonia Synkowski.
