Who is the health
care team at
Severna Park Middle School?
A full time Registered Nurse and a Licensed Practical Nurse are on staff at our
school.
Your School Nurse is a Registered Nurse – Mrs. K. Shank, R.N.
The School
Nurse is responsible for managing medication administration; developing nursing
assessments on special needs students; and developing emergency protocols for
children with chronic health conditions. She is also responsible for performing
student health appraisals, vision, and hearing screening. Mrs. Shank monitors chronic health conditions, develops and implements
student care plans, advises school teams on health issues, provides health
teaching, makes home visits, and assists with the management of disabled
students in the school.
As a member of the regular school team, Mrs. Shank works in conjunction with
Administrators, Guidance Counselors, Special Educators, School Psychologist, and
a Pupil Personnel Worker to develop special procedures for students, manage
immunization compliance, control communicable disease and improve attendance.
Your School Health Assistant is Mrs. S. Furbush
The Health Assistant in each school is primarily responsible for managing the
health room, providing first aid and administering oral medications as delegated by the school nurse. At
SPMS, Mrs. Bruchalski usually sees about 75 students daily. She provides on-site
care for our students’ immediate health needs, keeps the families and School
Nurse informed of health room visits as needed, and maintains statistics and
health room records on almost 1400 students.
What if my child needs medicine at school?
All medication given at school must be prescribed by a physician on "Parent’s Request to Administer Medication at School". This
includes over the counter medications. This form is available from the health room
or guidance or click the following link for the form:
Anne Arundel Co. Department of Health.
What if I need more information?
“A Parent’s Guide to School Health” can be found at the Anne Arundel
County Department of Health. It includes information on topics
ranging from when to keep children home from school to packing easy, healthy lunches. Please check out this excellent source of information.
Remember that the Health Room welcomes phone calls and visits from parents
regarding any concerns for their children! Please keep your school health team informed of pertinent
information regarding your child’s health needs. We are here to assist you and your child.
