MISSION AND PURPOSE OF PTA     Mission To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and to encourage parent and public involvement in this nation’s public school system.   Purpose To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship; to raise the standards of home life; to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth; to bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth; and to develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.   2011-12 Board   President Oversees all functions of PTA. Erica Heflin Treasurer Helps create, maintain and manage PTA budget.   John Mueller Secretary Records and distributes monthly board meeting minutes, creates membership email alias’, assists with document reproduction, and facilitates communication with board and members. Nanny Urbizo  Legislative Chair/Leadership Advisor Keeps board and members up to date on local, MD and National PTA Legislative work and leadership training opportunities. Membership Chair Recruits PTA members, creates registration application and collects dues, compiles and maintains member list, and distributes membership cards.   Family Involvement Chair Works with school to increase family involvement, coordinate volunteers, and provide family education and resources. Implements PTA family involvement programs such as Three for Me. Health & Safety Chair Fosters student and family health and safety at home & school by initiating & developing events & programs; disseminates literature.   Cultural Arts Chair Initiates, develops and executes cultural arts assemblies and family evening programs.  Gathers & disseminates multi-cultural literature. Keisha Lester Ways & Means Chair Initiates and conducts fundraisers, applies for grants, and requests donations from local businesses; also oversees the Box Tops & Spirit Wear Programs. Kacy Schloop/ Davie Kuye Family Events Coordinator Plans and organizes family fun events such as skate nights, dances, book fairs, Get Fit night, Career Fair, etc. Other Board Members A PTA Board also includes school principals, assistant principals and teacher representatives.
