Most clubs and activities are offered after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The activity period is over at 4:50 and activity buses are available for students who regularly ride a bus home.

String Orchestra

The String Orchestra is a club for all Strings students.  This club meets in the morning.  All strings students are expected to join this club and only students who join the club will be eligible to perform in the school concerts and field trips.

The Concert Band is a club for all Band students.  This club meets every Wednesday after school.  All band students are expected to join this club and only students who join the club will be eligible to perform in the school concerts and field trips.

This club is open to all students in grades six through eight.  Although only seven students may be on a “team” we will run as many teams as we have coaches.  (Parent volunteers needed. If you are interested in participating on a team, please come to one of our first few interest meetings.

Dance Club

Dance Company is a performing group open to all students grades six through eight.  Expressive students that love tap, jazz, ballet and modern dance will have the opportunity to learn dance routines and improve their technique.  There will be performance opportunities throughout the year.  Students interested in participating should attend the first informational meeting.

For 8th grade members that has been inducted to NJHS. Criteria for membership are a 3.5 GPA from 6th and 7th grade as well as good character and citizenship.

Intramurals are open to all students to give students an opportunity to compete in a team/individual game situation against other students within Old Mill South.  Intramurals are an extension of our Physical Education classroom activities.  Students will dress for intramurals as they would for PE class.  Tournaments are single elimination due to time constraints.  Sports offered may include:  kickball, capture the flag, indoor soccer, basketball, floor hockey, basketball free-throw, table tennis, and archery.

Media Club

Students will use technology and other forms of media to complete projects and other activities in support of classroom instruction.  Meetings will begin promptly in the media center.  All are welcome!

Go Green

Thursdays after school.

Designed for students who care about the health of our planet.  It is for students who wish to participate in activities to improve the environment of our school building, inside and outside.  Please join the Green club for a Green use of your time, a Green cause and a Green future!

Language Arts Tutorial is open to all grades for any students who wish to have extra help and reinforcement of concepts being covered in their regular classes.  Materials are not limited to novels and stories covered in the regular curriculum.  Teacher approval is needed prior to attendance .

 

 

 

STEM

Students will be introduced to the topic of of building and manipulating LEGO Mindstorm Robots.  They will explore the art behind robots and learn about the different careers connected to the robotics field.  They will also learn basic computer programming while working with different Texas Instruments Robots. 

Yearbook

Open to all students.  Club meets early September through May and publishes the yearbook for each academic school year.  It is necessary to attend all meetings.  Students will learn how to publish materials.  Students need to be energetic, outgoing, and eager to work hard.  Some additional dates and times may be required in order to meet deadlines.

Mixed Chorus

The Mixed Chorus is a club for all Chorus students.  This club meets every Thursday after school in the Cafeteria.  All chorus students are expected to join this club and only students who join the club will be eligible to perform in the school concerts and field trips.

Students participate in after-school meetings to discuss upcoming school events (i.e. dances, CRASC meetings, carnation sales, and school elections).  Students are voted in by their peers at the end of a school year for the next school year and at the beginning of the year for sixth grade.

Drama Club

The only place where drama is allowed and encouraged! Each meeting we will explore different aspects of theater including acting and production.  Student will be encouraged in participating in acting activities and to add their own interpretation to the classical performance roles.

 

Sea Perch Marine ROV

Investigates the science behind underwater submersibles as student’s research, design, and build a sea perch ROV.  Students will apply concepts such as Newton’s Law, buoyancy, and learn about electric systems.  Students will engage in engineering activities to build, assemble and solder the electronic components of their devices.  ROVs will be sea trialed at the Ruth Eason pool prior to a show case at the U. S. Naval Academy this spring.  Limit 20 students.

MESA Club

Thursdays after school Room Sci 4 & North School

The focus of the club is to engage students in a variety of engineering experiences that include bass wood bridge design and construction, wind turbine and presentation on green energy for Maryland’s energy resource future.  Students will enter a spring competition with Howard County Public Schools at JHUAPL(Johns Hopkins University Applies Physics Lab) and will participate in several planned field trips throughout the year.  Parent Volunteers are needed and welcome.  Limit 25 students.

Social Studies
