The Library Media Center

    at Old Mill Middle School North

  GOAL

The goal of the OMMN Library Media Center is to create lifelong learners and readers and to provide instructional and informational support of all curricula for the entire school community.

  HOURS & ACCESSIBILITY

 The school library is available to students prior to the start of school, 8:10 - 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday Help Day as long as there is adult supervision available and the students are able to follow all school rules.  .

Students visit the library with their teacher for research, book exchange, library lessons and literature appreciation.  In addition, students may come to the library  before and after school and in between classes to check out or return a book or to extend a friendly greeting. .

  CIRCULATION OF MATERIALS

All material is checked out for three weeks with the exception of magazines, which are due the following school day. Books may be renewed one time only.  

 COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

The school library prides itself on a well-balanced, up-to-date collection.  The focus of the collection is one that supports every teaching curriculum.  In addition, books are purchased for the needs, interests and curiosity of middle school students.

  INSTRUCTION

The school librarian and teachers collaborate to assure that students are proficient in the media skills included in the middle school library curriculum.  These skills are not taught in isolation but in conjunction with each department’s curriculum.  The Old Mill Middle School  North Library Media Center thrives on teaching students how to research efficiently and effectively.

    SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Each year,  the school library media center provides activities that foster student learning and independent reading.  Library orientation is conducted each fall for all grades. Knowing how to locate and access materials is stressed. Other activities include:

  • Scholastic Book Fair
  • Read and Hit a Home Run with the Bowie Baysox
  • Maryland Black-Eyed Susan book program
  • International Bookmark Exchange
  • Independent research projects
  • Service learning project support
  • Louie's All Stars

COMPUTER MINI-LAB

A 15 computer minilab is situated in the media center to support research projects.
