September 2007

To begin this edition of the Bulldog Newsletter I would like to thank those parents that participated in our Annual Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 18. The large turn out of parents and community members is a good indication that many of you got the chance to meet your child’s teachers.

The opening week of school set the foundation for the entire school year. I believe our faculty has worked diligently to create an environment in which your child can be successful. The work you have done and will do at home to prepare your child for school has a considerable impact on your child’s success at school.

Our School Improvement Plan this school year consists of school wide goals that are aligned with Anne Arundel County Public School’s system wide goals. Those goals are:

  1. Academic Achievement: 85% of all students demonstrating mastery on MSA reading and math.
  2. Provide a safe and supportive learning environment
  3. Increase Community Engagement

I would like to encourage you to assist your child in returning their fundraising forms and money prior to October 4.  Fundraiser items should arrive mid to late October.

First marking period interims were issued to students on Friday, September 28. Please use this time to review your child’s progress. Where necessary you may elect to contact your child’s guidance counselor or teachers for a conference.

This school year I believe you will find our school’s website to be a useful source of communication for staying up to date with the most relevant school information.

Lastly, we solicit your involvement with our PTSA. Our PTSA meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in our school’s Media Center.  Our Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) will meet Thursday, October 25, at 6:30 p.m. We are also looking for parents to be a part of our School Improvement Team (SIT) and Positive Behavior Interventions Supports (PBIS).

 Federal Impact Aid Survey

On Monday, October 1, 2007, your child will be bringing home a Federal Impact Aid Survey form.  Please fill out the information requested on the form and either mail it to Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) or return it to your child’s school.  The form will be inside a self-addressed, stamped envelope for its return.  This is a multiple child form and will hold up to five of your children’s names.  Should you have more than five children, please utilize a second form that you can either obtain from the school or download from the AACPS website, www.aacps.org, Students, under Forms.  The Parent-Pupil Survey form for 2007-2008 will be available to download on September 28.  We will also be using our Connect-Ed Automated Telephone Notification System to remind you about the significance of completing this survey and returning it.  The school system receives approximately $3 million from the Federal government in support of

our children after the forms are processed.  Should you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Donna Barker at 410-222-5200.

 Yearbook Photos

Picture days are scheduled for October 4 and 5.  Our Make-up day is November 9.  Students will be given a payment envelope one week prior to picture day.  If your daughter/son does not receive one, additional copies will be available in the main office.  In the interest of safety, check or money order is preferred.

All students will be photographed for the yearbook and a school identification card.  Only those students with payment and a completed order form on picture day will receive a portrait package.

Our school has contracted Lifetouch as the official yearbook photographer.  A variety of portrait packages and several background choices will be offered.  Lifetouch can provide additional information to you directly by calling 1-800-445-1189 or at Answers@Lifetough.com.

We hope that by providing this information to you early, your son/daughter will not be left out.

Picture Day Volunteers Needed

Lifetouch

Volunteers are needed for picture day!  If making children happy makes you happy then we have an opportunity for you to assist the photographer on picture day.  Lifetouch photography needs your outgoing personality, positive attitude, and organizational skills to assist the photographer for a successful picture day.  Volunteers will be asked to distribute camera cards, keep lines orderly, assist students with grooming needs and answer questions.  We ask that each parent volunteer for a minimum of 4 hours in exchange for a complimentary package “B1” of your child.  We estimate that two parent helpers for the morning and two parent helpers in the afternoon would be sufficient to keep students flowing to the camera efficiently.  All volunteers need to register with the Lifetouch office prior to picture day.

If you are available on picture day please call one of the convenient telephone numbers below and let us know that you want to volunteer on picture day. It’ll just take a few minutes to pre-register and receive a confirmation.

Local:  410-644-7700

Long Distance:  800-445-1191

We appreciate your partnership in working together for a successful picture day.

The Crossing Guards hours for the students who are walkers are listed below:

 Campbell Labels/Box Tops for Education

Once again we are collecting Campbell Labels and General Mills “Box Tops for Education” coupons.  With your help the school can purchase educational equipment and/or items for the children.   Please have your child drop off the labels and coupons in the
Campbell Soup barrel located in the Volunteer Coordinator’s office.  Mr. Bob loves to give out bulldog bucks to students for the labels and coupons.
